Communities across KwaZulu-Natal are reeling from the aftermath of heavy rains and flooding that swept through the province in December, leaving a trail of tragedy and destruction in its wake. As the waters recede, the grim toll stands at 31 lives lost, with an additional three individuals still missing, compounding the anguish for families awaiting news of their loved ones.

Ladysmith emerged as one of the worst-hit areas, bearing the brunt of the calamity with 23 reported fatalities. The uMgungundlovu district faced the highest toll on homes, witnessing extensive damage and displacement within its communities.

The floods wreaked havoc not only on lives but also on homes, businesses, and crucial public infrastructure. Schools, roads, and bridges bore the brunt of the deluge, exacerbating the challenges faced by residents trying to rebuild their lives.

Immediate assistance was provided to affected families, offering essentials such as blankets, plastic sheeting, and vouchers to help alleviate some of the immediate hardships they face.
