Hubert Mweli, the Director-general of the Basic Education Department, provided an insightful performance breakdown, offering a sneak peek ahead of the official results announcement scheduled for Thursday evening.
“KZN is making significant strides, improving its distinction rate from 6% in 2022 to an impressive 8.3%,” Mweli revealed. This remarkable uptick solidifies KZN’s position as a frontrunner in academic excellence.
Mweli highlighted the province’s substantial contribution to the national education landscape, stating, “KZN accounts for 25% of the total number of learners, making it the largest segment in our educational system, followed closely by Gauteng.” The Class of 2023, representing this education powerhouse, achieved an overall pass rate of 82.9%, marking a notable 2.8 percentage point increase compared to the previous year.
While the Free State maintained its position as the top-achieving province with an impressive 89.3% overall pass rate, Limpopo emerged as the most improved province, boasting a 7.4% increase.
