Law firm representing listeriosis victims hits back at Tiger Brands over compensation ‘promises’
The law firm representing victims impacted by Tiger Brands’ 2017 listeriosis outbreak, say the company has yet to compensate families for their medical expenses.
Richard Spoor Attorneys said the engagements are part of an ongoing process it initiated with the food manufacturer’s legal team from the inception of this litigation in March 2018.
On Wednesday, Tiger Brands stated that it was in talks with attorneys on the families however, Tiger Brands did not disclosed how much out each family.
According to Richard Spoor attorneys, while these engagements are important in the overall effort to obtain relief for the victims of the 2017/2018 listeriosis outbreak, no compensation for any person has been agreed to or received at this stage.
The law firm accused of Tiger Brands of denying liability to the victims of the outbreak
“Any settlement or interim relief discussions are on a ‘without prejudice’ basis and are parallel to the litigation process. We remain confident that we will establish Tiger Brands’ liability to all of the victims of the outbreak and, as such, are continuing with our preparations for trial to ensure justice for persons who suffered harm as a result of consuming Tiger Brands’ listeria contaminated products,“ the law firm explained.
Between 2017 and 2018, South Africa recorded the largest listeriosis outbreak, claiming the lives and 218 people and affected at least 1,000 more. The outbreak was traced to a Tiger Brands facility based in Polokwane in Limpopo.
