Police in KwaZulu-Natal are continuing their search for the shooters behind the killing of traffic officer on the province’s north coast, earlier this week.

It is alleged that Desmond Arumugam Pillay was shot dead by a taxi driver while stopped on the N2 highway at the Groutville off-ramp. He was on duty at the time.

IPSS Medical Rescue said the officer was declared deceased at the scene.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in KZN, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, confirmed that an investigation is under way.

“Police in KwaDukuza are investigating a case of murder following an incident in which a 50-year-old man was fatally wounded. It is alleged that he was on duty when he was shot by an unknown suspect,” she said.

The shooting comes just days after a a woman was run over and the shot on the R102 between Stanger and Ballito.

IOL reported that the woman was initially struck by a motorist whose car then crashed into another car. The driver got out of his car, shot the woman dead, and fled on foot.

In a separate incident, a Marshall Security armed response officer was shot dead at a local shop on Chris Hani Road in the Park Hill area.

Marshall Security’s Tyron Powell said Sivuyile Madikizela stopped to buy a beverage and did not realise the shop was being robbed at the time.

“He entered wearing his Marshall Security uniform, and the startled suspects opened fire, fatally wounding him.

“Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team and Netcare 911 were immediately dispatched to the scene. Despite valiant efforts by Netcare 911 paramedics, Officer Madikizela was declared deceased shortly after their arrival,” Powell said.
