Siblings stopped to help people in stranded vehicle when they were shot and robbed
Police in Mpumalanga are investigating an incident where two siblings were shot and robbed after they stopped their vehicle to render assistance to people in a vehicle which appeared to be stuck.
“The siblings were driving on the R40 Road near the Nature Reserve when they allegedly noticed a vehicle known to them parked next to the road on Sunday, November 2, 2024, at about 2.20am,” said Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson, Captain Magonseni Nkosi.
The siblings stopped their vehicle with the intention of rendering assistance.
Immediately after they stopped, police said gunshots were fired from the stationery vehicle.
“The driver was shot on the lower body whilst his brother was shot on his back. The assailant approached the victims. They were robbed of one firearm.”
After the shooting and robbery, one of the victims managed to drive to the hospital for medical attention.
One of the victims succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
“Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect(s). Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspect(s) may please contact Lieutenant Colonel Busisiwe Kunene on 082 422 8189. Community members may also call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111,” the police appealed.
“Alternatively, members of the public can send information via My SAPS App. All received information will be treated as confidential as possible.”
Meanwhile, acting provincial commissioner of police in SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi has urged community members to “call police for assistance before they can put their lives in danger”.
Mkhwanazi has appealed to community members to prioritise their safety when rendering assistance to stranded people, especially at night.
