Bergrivier Mayor 'deeply hurt' after arrest on drugs and illegal ammunition
Bergrivier Mayor Alderman Ray van Rooy said that his arrest and subsequent questioning on drugs and one round of ammunition allegedly found at his home was a smear campaign to tarnish his image.
This comes after police raided his house at Piketberg on December 11, 2024, where authorities found drugs and ammunition.
He was arrested and subsequently released from custody after questioning and has not been charged.
Following his release, Van Rooy denied any wrongdoing and said he was committed to giving his full cooperation to police.
On Tuesday, Van Rooy released a statement saying the incident had wrecked him and his family.
“The incident was a desperate attempt to smear my reputation and bring harm to my name. I am deeply hurt by what has transpired, as it has caused suffering not only to me but also to my family.
“I would like to make it abundantly clear that at no point in my life have I ever been involved in the selling or distribution of drugs. I have never used any drugs either. The white substance and one round of ammunition found were, in fact, discovered outside of my house, stashed between wooden pallets,” he said in a statement.
The DA mayor said the ordeal has been immensely painful and his family also suffered as a result.
“My wife and children are reeling in trauma and embarrassment of the situation. This has also caused my pregnant daughter severe strain. It shatters my heart to witness my family tormented by something I had absolutely no part in.
“For a lifetime, I have fought against drugs, abuse, and all other socio-economic issues that cripple our communities. I have always endeavoured to be a custodian of positive influence and change – and I will not stop. Bergrivier residents know me, they know I would not and do not involve myself with drugs,” he said.
Van Rooy said the mastermind behind this smear campaign will be exposed.
“As a God-fearing man, the truth will come to light and ultimately set me free,” he added.
