United States (US) President Donald Trump is set to speak later today with Russian President Vladimir Putin to further engage in an effort to end the war in Ukraine. Washington is seeking Moscow’s support for a 30-day ceasefire.

US diplomats have indicated that the ball was now in Russia’s court after Ukraine already agreed to the ceasefire deal currently on the table.

The expected call between the two leaders follows a visit last week to Moscow by US envoy Steve Witkoff who met with President Putin to put forward the ceasefire offer.

The Russian leader indicated support in principle for the cessation but cited various nuances and sought further clarity on addressing the root causes of the conflict.

President Trump indicated on Sunday that there was a very good chance of reaching a deal and that discussions had already taken place about dividing up assets and continued around the question of land and power plants.

It remains unclear what security guarantees Ukraine might receive from the US in any future peace agreement.
