Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for six men suspected to be behind a shooting incident at a taxi rank in Jeppestown, Johannesburg this morning.

Four people were shot and killed and three others wounded. Two of the deceased victims were vendors at the rank.

“Through our preliminary investigations it is suspected that this must be taxi violence related and as the province, the commissioner has already mobilised a dedicated group of detectives who will be investigating this case and it will be investigated by our taxi violence unit in the province,” says Gauteng Police Spokesperson, Dimakatso Nevuhulwi.

Taxi operators say they fearing for their lives following the deadly shooting.

A taxi operator who prefers anonymity for fear of victimisation, says taxi-related violence is getting out of control.

“This is scary, even the people who died wouldn’t know why they were killed. We are not comfortable. We don’t know who to trust anymore. Once you see a person carrying a gun, it takes you back to today’s scene.”
