“Accused number two Steveno Van Rhyn gave confession willingly” – SABC News

Another police officer in the Joshlin Smith trial has testified that accused number two, Steveno Van Rhyn gave his confession willingly.

Colonel Edward Clark was tasked with taking the confession from Van Rhyn. A video showing that an initial so-called confession of Steveno van Rhyn played in the Western Cape High Court sitting at Saldanha on the Cape West Coast.

Van Rhyn and his co-accused Jacquen Appollis claim that police tortured them into making confessions with regards to the disappearance of Joshlin Smith.

In the video, Colonel Edward Clark asks Van Rhyn how he sustained his injuries. Counsel for Van Rhyn says her client did not understand the line of questioning from Clark.

This is what Clark had to say in reply, “A standard five dropout could understand what a justice of peace is.”

Clark says, “I specifically recall going back to the video my lord I said one of two things. I have got the same powers as a magistrate has, secondly, I told him have you been in court proceedings before and he said he knows how it works and I believed him he understood my lord.”
