China responds to US tariffs, imposes 84% – SABC News

As the trade war intensifies, China announced it will impose 84 percent on US goods from Thursday.

This is up from the 34 percent, Beijing previously announced in a tit for tat move.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has called on the United States to stop its arrogant and bullying behaviour.

This after US President Donald Trump’s 104 percent tariffs have taken effect on Chinese imports.

“The US side is still imposing extreme pressure on China by imposing tariffs. China firmly opposes and will never accept such arrogance and bullying behaviour. If the US really wants to solve the problem through dialogue and negotiations, it should show an attitude of equality, respect and reciprocity. If the US disregards the interests of both countries and the international community and insists on waging a tariff war and trade war, China will definitely retaliate.”

The gloves are off between Beijing and Washington DC, a sentiment shared by the Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Lin Jian.

This is after the 104 percent tariffs against Chinese imports to the United States of America have taken effect.

US President Donald Trump’s so-called reciprocal tariffs on dozens of countries has kicked in, deepening the global trade war.

Jian says the Chinese government has made their stance clear.

“The Chinese government has me its solemn position clear regarding the US abuse of tariffs. The United States has imposed tariffs on all its trading partners including China, which infringes upon the legitimate rights and interests of other countries, seriously violates the rules of the World Trade Organisation, gravely undermines the rules based multilateral trading system and disrupts global economic order and stability.”

It further announced controls on exports of medium and heavy rare earths such as samarium, terbium and others to the United States.
