Govt confident Jonas will deliver as Special Envoy to the US – SABC News
Minister in the Presidency responsible for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Maropene Ramokgopa, says government is confident that former Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas is capable of delivering on the mandate he has been given in the United States (US)
This follows the Presidency’s announcement yesterday of Jonas’ appointment as a special envoy for South Africa to the US.
Speaking to SABC News on the sidelines of the three-day second G20 Development Working Group 2025 meeting at Somerset West in the Western Cape, Ramokgopa says Jonas brings a wealth of experience and expertise.
He says, “We are confident in the choice…in the chosen envoy that the President has been able to appoint, precisely because it brings forward the wealth of experience in business, wealth of experience also in government.”
“If you can remember that he has been our Deputy Minister at some point and also he served in the Eastern Cape. Therefore, I really believe that the President has chosen someone with a balanced experience that will be able to convince the USA and to show them what South Africa is actually made all about.”
Ramokgopa adds, “So I do know without a doubt that Mr. Jonas will definitely come back with what is needed for the cooperation of South Africa and the United States.”
