Funeral mass date of Roman Pontiff Francis released – SABC News


On Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10:00am the first day of the Novendiali (nine days of mourning), the Funeral Mass of the Roman Pontiff Francis will be celebrated on the parvis of St. Peter’s Basilica, according to the rites laid out in the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis.

The funeral liturgy will be presided over by His Most Reverend Eminence, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals.

Concelebration will be open to the following: Patriarchs and Cardinals, who are to gather by 9:00 a.m. in the Chapel of St. Sebastian inside the Basilica, bringing with them the white damask mitre.

Archbishops and Bishops, who are to gather by 8:30 a.m. at the Constantine Arm, bringing with them amice, alb, cincture, and a simple white mitre.

Priests, who are to go directly to their designated section in St. Peter’s Square by 8:30 a.m., where they will vest in amice, alb, cincture, and red stole (brought with them.

At the end of the Eucharistic Celebration, the rites of Ultima Commendatio and Valedictio will be observed. Afterwards, the coffin of the Roman Pontiff will be brought into St. Peter’s Basilica and then transferred to the Basilica of St. Mary Major for burial.

In accordance with the Motu Proprio “Pontificalis Domus”, members of the Papal Household (Cappella Pontificia) who wish to attend the liturgical celebration without concelebrating must request a Notification by email at celebrations@celebra.va.

All attendees must wear their appropriate choir dress and be present on the parvis of St. Peter’s Basilica by 9:00 a.m., where they will be directed to their places by papal masters of ceremonies.
