SASSA makes biometric verification mandatory for all beneficiaries – SABC News


The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is introducing a mandatory biometric enrolment and identity verification process in an effort to improve security.

SASSA says this will be used as an alternative form of identification other than the standard 13-digit South African Identity number.

The compulsory biometric system will be implemented from the 5th of next month. Sassa spokesperson, Paseka Letsatsi says this is aimed
at preventing fraudulent activities related to identity misrepresentation.

“This initiative aims to enhance the security and accuracy of client identification within the agency system beginning on the 5 May 2025 all new lines to use alternative forms of identification other than the standard thirteen digits of South African ID number, as well as existing light undergoing reviews or changes to their personal information will be required to undergo compulsory biometrics enrollment. This measure is part of such’s ongoing effort to improve their integrity and efficiency of its system and how it services clients.”
