Guterres concerned about Indian army operations against Pakistan – SABC News

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his concern about Indian military operations against Pakistan, reiterating his call for maximum restraint from both countries.

He was reacting to the news that India had launched strikes on various sites in Pakistan in the aftermath of an attack on Hindu tourists.

India has blamed Pakistan for backing the militants responsible for the April 22 terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 26 people.

A number of casualties have been confirmed including some deaths attributed to the Indian strikes.

Guterres says the world could not afford a military confrontation between India and Pakistan after warning a day earlier that a military solution was no solution.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry called it an unprovoked and blatant act of war accusing India’s Air Force of violating its sovereignty and the UN Charter.

India’s Defence Ministry says it carried out precision strikes targeting terrorist camps “in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir”.

Pakistan said it reserved the right to respond appropriately at a time and place of its choosing.
