Limpopo man jailed for raping stepdaughter while her mom worked nightshift

A 36-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years direct imprisonment by the Giyani Regional Court in Limpopo after being convicted of repeatedly raping his 11-year-old stepdaughter.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the abuse occurred inside the family home in Giyani Section F on May 28, 2024, while the girl’s mother was working a night shift.

The man later confessed his actions during a family meeting he requested the following day, stating he had “a burning issue” to disclose.

“The meeting was arranged and a 36-year-old stepfather revealed that he had sexual intercourse with the child, and it was not for the first time,” said Ledwaba.

The local social workers were informed about the matter, and they advised the mother to report the crime to the police, and a rape case was opened immediately.

“Sergeant Maropeng Alpheus Mashapa, attached to Giyani Detectives, managed to apprehend the suspect the same day on Thursday, 29 May 2024, and successfully opposed bail until the accused was found guilty,” said Ledwaba.

He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Limpopo’s Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the outcome and welcomed the court verdict for removing this individual who preyed on vulnerable and innocent victims who are in danger.
