The family of a medical intern at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in uMlazi, South of Durban, is seeking justice following the death of their son.
The 25-year-old doctor Alulutho Mazwi died on Monday after allegedly being forced by his supervisor to work though he was ill.
It is reported that he fainted twice while on duty.
Meanwhile, the Public Servants Association (PSA) has lashed out claiming that it has consistently warned the Department of Health in KwaZulu Natal about the inhumane working conditions, and the abuse of power at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital.
PSA Manager in KZN, Mlungisi Ndlovu is demanding the immediate precautionary suspension of the implicated supervisor.
“We call for the MEC, we call for the premier and we call the minister to be able to attend to these issues because the interns in KZN are being abused. They are being ill-treated and all other frontline workers. This is a matter of urgency. It is for this reason, as PSA, we visited the facility and we were able to listen to the pain of this interns that are continuously being abused by senior medical officers. That’s why we call for urgent investigation,” says Ndlovu.
