Gauteng police captain faces court over serious rape allegations

A police captain accused of rape appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court earlier in Gauteng on Wednesday.

National Prosecution Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the 59-year-old man, employed as a firearms trainer at the Tshwane Police Academy in Pretoria West, has been in the South African Police Service (SAPS) for 31 years and is accused of allegedly raping a 20-year-old female police trainee.

“It is alleged that in April 2025, the complainant walked past the accused, without saluting him. The accused allegedly reprimanded her, accusing her of misconduct. The complainant explained that she had not seen him,” said Mahanjana.

On May 6, the complainant was strolling with her platoon to their bungalows when the accused allegedly summoned her to his office.  When she entered, the police captain allegedly shut the door behind her.

The NPA said the captain allegedly threatened to dismiss the woman for not greeting him unless she slept with him.

He allegedly told her to partially strip as he half undressed and then allegedly raped her. He then instructed her to get dressed and go.

“The complainant reported the incident to authorities at the academy, who contacted the police. The complainant was then taken for medical attention and referred to the Laudium Thuthuzela Care Centre for further assessment and support.”

The alleged culprit was apprehended one day after the event, on May 7. The police subsequently turned the case over to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for inquiry.

The matter has been postponed in court until May 23, due to an objected bail application.
