Zackie Achmat raises alarm over Pepfar funding cuts affecting health services
Prominent community advocate, Zackie Achmat, has sounded the alarm over disruptions in health service delivery triggered by the withdrawal of vital Pepfar funds.
His impromptu intervention halted the deliberations of a recent meeting of the Portfolio Committee on Health this week, raising concerns over the severe implications of these financial cuts, particularly for communities dependent on critical health services, including life-saving antiretroviral treatment.
In a subsequent discussion, committee members expressed their collective empathy, fully acknowledging the weight of Achmat’s concerns. They recognised that these funding cuts pose a significant risk to the health and well-being of vulnerable populations who depend on consistent access to healthcare.

Committee chairperson, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, said a follow-up meeting with Achmat has been proposed.
The committee recalled addressing the issue of Pepfar funding earlier this year but underscored the need for renewed discussions in light of the latest developments.
They have also received updated information from the Department of Health regarding the implications of these funding withdrawals on the nation’s health services.
Meanwhile, the committee is set to meet with Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi to gather further insights on Friday.
