Supporters of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign are expected to descend on the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town for a Nakba Day rally on Sunday.

This year marks the 77th anniversary of the Nakba, which means “catastrophe” in Arabic.

It is the name Palestinians give to the permanent displacement of over 700,000 Palestinians from their homes and villages in 1948 during fighting that led to the creation of the state of Israel.

PSC coordinator, Usuf Chikte, says the rally is part of a global call to stand in solidarity with Palestinians.

He says they’ll again demand a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and an end to all arms sales to Israel.

“The Palestinian Solidarity Campaign calls on all South Africans to join us at the Nakba Day Rally. Palestinians are being starved and bombed to death. Show your solidarity, attend the rally and join the programme of action to end the genocide, to end Zionism and to dismantle apartheid Israel. Free, free Palestine. Stop the Nakba and stop the genocide,” he says.
