On 25 May 1995, the Springboks began their home World Cup campaign with victory against the Wallabies at Newlands.

The Boks, making their first World Cup appearance having missed the first two tournaments in 1987 and 1991, needed to beat the world champions in the opening match to take the “high road” to the final.

The most memorable moment of the game came just before half time when Bok left wing Pieter Hendriks came up against Wallabies legend David Campese.

Campese had been the star of the 1991 World Cup, but the winger’s powers had waned considerably by the time he arrived in South Africa four years later.

The Wallabies dominated the first 30 minutes of the match and scored a try through flyhalf Michael Lynagh.

Then, just before half time, the Boks seized control.

Right wing James Small burst into the Wallabies half and offloaded to hooker James Dalton, who found lock Mark Andrews. The ball was recycled and sent wide to Small, who fed Hendriks, and he beat Campese on the outside for a crucial try.

It gave the Boks a 14-13 half-time lead and they went on to claim a 27-18 victory.
