The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) is demanding full accountability from Sibanye Stillwater mine near Westonaria, after 260 workers were trapped underground at Kloof 7 Shaft.

AMCU blames management for neglecting safety and failing to maintain emergency escape routes.

AMCU President Joseph Mathunjwa says this isn’t an accident but criminal negligence.

Mathunjwa says Sibanye has a tendency to neglect all safety protocols.

“Previously, the workers died in one of the shafts, again at Kloof and there was no mine manager who was arrested or was accountable. Even with this accident, there was no Section 54 in terms of Mine Health and Safety Act. Section 54 is when you stop your operation, and go and investigate, and find out what was the fault,” says Mathunjwa.
