Farrell to leave France?

England flyhalf Owen Farrell is reportedly set to leave Racing 92 after an injury-hit first season with the French club.

The 33-year-old, who still has a year remaining on his two-year contract, could return to Saracens ahead of the 2025-26 season, according to L’Equipe.

“Currently suffering from a concussion – a problem that is plaguing him – Farrell would like to play less and, above all, start to move into a player-coach role at Saracens, the club of his life, with whom he has won three Champions Cups,” said the French sports daily on Monday.

The mid-season departure of former England coach Stuart Lancaster as Racing 92 director of rugby may also have influenced the player’s decision.

“If Farrell does indeed consider leaving the Top 14, he will likely have to comply with the financial terms of Racing, who will never agree to [let him leave] without decent compensation,” L’Equipe added.

“For [club owner] Jacky Lorenzetti, who has always had an admitted weakness for world-class No 10s, Farrell’s arrival is, if the story ends there, a disappointment, a flop even, somewhat reminiscent of Johnny Sexton’s time in Hauts-de-Seine. In any case, Farrell hasn’t made us forget Dan Carter, Johan Goosen, Pat Lambie or Finn Russell.

“In short, he had very little impact on Racing’s game, even though everyone continued to praise his daily investment.”
