Georgia to tackle Cheetahs in Bok warm-up

The 130-year anniversary of the Cheetahs will be marked with a commemorative clash against Georgia at Free State Stadium in July.

The match will take play on Friday, 11 July and is part of the union’s milestone celebrations, recognising the Free State Rugby Union’s rich heritage which dates back to 1895. It also serves as a key part of the Cheetahs’ preparations for the upcoming 2025 Currie Cup season, which kicks off on 26 July.

Georgia, known for their powerful forward play, will use the match to warm up for the Test against the Springboks in Nelspruit on 19 July. The quality of opposition offers an ideal match for the Cheetahs, coached Frans Steyn, following a promising SA Cup campaign that ended with a semi-final loss to Griquas.

Adding to the excitement, Free State Rugby has confirmed the signing of several new players ahead of the Currie Cup. Among them is Ntokozo Makhaza, the 2025 Varsity Cup Player of the Year, who officially joins the squad in July. His arrival is expected to inject fresh energy and playmaking flair into the backline.

The Cheetahs will open their Currie Cup campaign against the Boland Cavaliers in Wellington on 27 July — a match that promises to draw strong local support as the team kicks off a new season with high hopes.
