Five new non-permanent seats to serve on the Security Council elected – SABC News
The United Nations General Assembly has elected five new non-permanent seats to serve on the Security Council for two years starting on January 1st next year.
The new council members-elect include two from the African continent, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Liberia.
President of the General Assembly Philémon Yang announced the new five members.
“Having obtained the required two third majority and the largest number of votes – Bahran, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Latvia and Liberia are elected members of the Security Council for a two-year term beginning on January 1st 2026. I congratulate the states that have just been elected members of the Security Council and I thank the tellers for their assistance in this election,” says Yang.
