Pappi backs EFF’s court bid against fuel levy hike – SABC News
The People against Petrol and Paraffin Price Increases have expressed support for the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) court challenge against the general fuel levy increase.
EFF’s urgent application against the increase is under way in the Western Cape High Court in Cape Town.
The 15 cents and 16 cents per litre increase for diesel and petrol, respectively, is set to take effect tomorrow.
Pappi’s National Convener, Visvin Reddy believes there is an urgent need to reform the country’s fuel pricing model.
Reddy says, “While the fuel levy increase is concerning, it is merely a symptom of deeper systemic issues in South Africa because the fuel pricing structure in SA is actually criminal.”
He says, “ The current pricing model disproportionately burdens consumers with taxes and levies, comprising a significant portion of the pump price. So you’re paying over 40% and with the latest increase it’s going to go closer to 50% that’s going to go to the government.”
