Several Eastern Cape passes closed due to snowfall – SABC News

Lootsberg Pass, an N9 road between Graaff Reinet and Middelburg in the Eastern Cape, has been closed to traffic, as snow continues to grow thicker on the road.

This as provincial authorities continue to urge motorists to exercise extreme caution as snowfall has been reported on the Wapadsberg Pass along the R61 between Nxuba and Graaff-Reinet.

Provincial transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose says they are closely monitoring more roads that remain open.

“We are keeping a close eye on that one as there is snowfall, Barkly Pass is another area that usually gives us problems, so is Nico Malan Pass but those passes remain open to traffic but despite the fact that they remain open to traffic we are urging road users to use them only when it’s necessary to do so and approach with caution.”

KZN braces for heavy rain

KwaZulu-Natal is bracing itself for heavy rainfall that may result in flooding. The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 2 alert.

It warns of severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours over the southern and eastern parts of the province.

Forecaster Ayanda Nsele says snow is expected, but only confined to the mountain tops..

“We are expecting showers and thunderstorms, 60% in the North and 30% in the extreme Northeastern parts. We are expecting very cold conditions over the southwestern parts and cold along most parts of the province, but cooler along the coast and adjacent interior.” –  Additional reporting by Nombuso Dlamini
