Wainstein trial to proceed despite André Naude’s murder: NPA – SABC News
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says the recent fatal shooting of alleged underworld figure André Naude, an accused in the murder trial of steroid king Brian Wainstein, will not hinder the trial underway in the Western Cape High Court.
Naude is the latest accused in the matter to have been killed in a suspected hit. He was shot dead in Cape Town’s northern suburb of Parow on Thursday.
Notorious for his role in the nightclub security scene in the Mother City. 55-year-old Naude was on trial alongside alleged gang leader Jerome Booysen and others at the time of his murder.
He died after sustaining multiple bullet wounds when the occupants of a charcoal-coloured BMW allegedly fired shots at him in Voortrekker Road.
Together with the now-deceased Mark Lifman, Naudé and Booysen were charged with the murder of international steroid smuggler Wainstein in his upmarket Constantia home in 2017.
The state contends that Wainstein’s killing was financed by Lifman, who, together with Naude, benefited from the illegal steroid business.
Lifman was shot and killed in George in the Southern Cape a day before he was due to appear in the Western Cape High Court in November last year. Despite the murders of several accused in the Wainstein case, authorities say the trial will not be derailed.
“The NPA can confirm that the incident will not have an impact on the case. The part-heard trial will continue against the remaining accused,” says NPA spokesperson in the Western Cape, Eric Ntabazalila.
Naude was a close associate and friend of Lifman, from whom another alleged underworld figure, Nafiz Modack, tried to wrestle control of nightclub security in Cape Town in 2017. This resulted in a bloody war over lucrative security contracts.
Naude’s killing reportedly brings the number of accused in the Wainstein murder case, gunned down over the past few years, to five. Police have appealed to the public to come forward with any information that may lead to the arrest of those responsible for killing him.
“The matter you are referring to is under investigation and no arrests have been made yet. Anyone with any information is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or to use the mobile application MY SAPS anonymously,” says WC Spokesperson FC Van Wyk.
The Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) is probing Naude’s murder.
