Dirks in the Dark: 'I am not aware of my removal'

The opposition leader in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Legislature and Whip of the Umkhonto WeSizwe (MK) party, Mervyn Dirks, has stated that he was never informed of his alleged removal from his leadership position.

The claims come amid escalating tension and upheaval within the party’s ranks following high-profile leadership changes.

On Tuesday, reports suggested that Dirks had been ousted from his role.

However, the opposition figure firmly denied these reports, telling IOL he has not received formal communication from the party’s leadership, including the President or MK national officials, regarding such a decision.

“I think that you should seek clarity on this matter from the MK national spokesperson or President Zuma,” Dirks remarked, indicating his lack of awareness about any leadership changes.

This development follows a wave of shock and controversy within MK, as several senior leaders have been removed or have resigned under circumstances that continue to raise questions.

Notably, the party’s former secretary-general, Floyd Shivambu, was among those ousted, prompting speculation about internal power struggles and shifting allegiances.

The situation has created a tense atmosphere within the party, with supporters and critics awaiting official statements to clarify the leadership changes.

MKP has yet to formally respond to Dirks’ removal claims or the recent leadership upheaval.

IOL has sent questions and tried to call the party leaders, but they were not available. The story will be updated once the comment is received.

Dirks’ alleged removal comes after the party has expelled or redeployed members from their ranks. Shivambu and former parliamentary chief whip, Mzwanele Manyi are among those redeployed.

Manyi was replaced by Colleen Makhubele as the chief whip.

Meanwhile, party leader, Jacob Zuma, made it clear over the weekend at a rally that they will not tolerate delinquency by any member.

Zuma said they would not beg members who thought they were too big for the party.
