E Cape police investigate fatal shooting of WSU senior official – SABC News


​Eastern Cape police are investigating a case of murder following a fatal shooting of a senior official at the Walter Sisulu University, outside the institution’s Nelson Mandela Drive Campus in Mthatha,in the Eastern Cape on Thursday evening.

Police Spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana says police discovered the victim deceased inside a stationary vehicle, and the motive of the killing is unknown at this stage.

“Preliminary forensic analysis confirms the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds while seated in the driver’s position. The motive remains unknown. The identity of the deceased will be formally released once next-of-kin notification is complete, as per SAPS protocol. Forensic experts and detectives are actively processing the secured crime scene. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of Eastern Cape Major General Thandiswa Kupiso stated that SAPS has mobilised maximum resources to pursue all leads. Public speculation must be avoided to preserve the integrity of the investigation,” says Gantana.

It is reported that that Walter Sisulu Senior official was ambushed on the road leading to his eNkulekweni residence. Police officials and forensics are at the scene collecting information.

Walter Sisulu workers are also at the scene, shocked and traumatized.

The university has been facing unrest raging from student protest, to legal battles, intervention from other stakeholders trying to reach an agreement between students and the management of the university.
