Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) is rolling out a comprehensive infrastructure maintenance and capital expansion programme across its nine airports. 

ACSA’s national maintenance initiative has focused on high-impact infrastructure elements, including sewerage systems, ablution facilities, and fire escapes.

More than just structural improvements, these efforts are being bolstered by enhanced safety and hygiene protocols in high-traffic areas, designed to fortify security measures and elevate user experiences.

At the forefront of these enhancements is OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA), where a phased refurbishment of ablution facilities is currently underway.

This project, which commenced in December 2024, will comprehensively upgrade male, female, baby-change, and accessible amenities, aiming for completion by December 2025. 

During a recent stakeholder meeting with airline representatives, ACSA Chief Executive Officer, Mpumi Mpofu, articulated the vision behind these upgrades, revealing that many projects are slated for completion between late 2025 and 2027.

“This programme is a strong signal of ACSA’s recovery following the Covid-19 pandemic,” she said.

Key refurbishment and capacity enhancement projects

The infrastructure upgrade programme goes beyond mere maintenance; it represents a sweeping initiative designed to modernise facilities and strengthen operational resilience while accommodating anticipated growth. The following highlights provide a glimpse into ACSA’s ambitious plans:

• Jet Fuel Infrastructure at ORTIA: A new 20-inch jet fuel feeder line will enhance supply reliability, alongside upgrades to backup power generators to safeguard uninterrupted operations.
• Passenger Loading Bridges (PLBs): Refurbishment and replacement plans are underway at various sites, aiming for structural integrity and improved functionality, with key milestones projected from November 2025 through 2026.
• Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS): A phased replacement of UPS units by 2026 will enhance energy resilience at crucial touchpoints across the airports.
• People Movers: The ongoing replacement and refurbishment of escalators and lifts is addressing existing operational inefficiencies, with several installations already completed and the programme set to finish in 2027.

• Instrument Landing and Weather Systems: The replacement of Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) and Automated Weather Observation Systems (AWOS) is geared towards boosting aviation safety, with most milestones due by the end of 2026.
• Terminal and Roofing Works: Upgrades include HVAC enhancements and roof waterproofing to ensure top-notch safety and comfort within terminals.
• Fuel Systems and Fire Infrastructure: Significant refurbishments of fuel receipt meters, hydrants, and booster pumps are in progress, reinforcing safety and reliability in critical systems.
