Durban Road Closure: N2 highway between Spaghetti Junction and Umgeni Road to close for bridge demolition

The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (Sanral) has confirmed a full weekend closure of parts of the N2 and M13 to allow for the demolition of the second half of the old King Cetshwayo Bridge in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

The closure will take place from 6 pm on Saturday, June 21 until 4 am on Monday, June 23, as part of the ongoing upgrade of the EB Cloete Interchange, commonly known as Spaghetti Junction.

“Construction continues on the upgraded King Cetshwayo Bridge, following its partial demolition in October 2023,” said Jason Lowe, Sanral’s KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Specialist Geometrics Engineer.

“This closure is part of the ongoing upgrade process for the N2 and the EB Cloete Interchange, aimed at relieving congestion and improving road safety along this critical national route.”

Road users are advised of the following closures:

N2 North and South Bound between EB Cloete Interchange and Umgeni Road Interchange closed from 6pm Saturday to 4am Monday.

M13 East and West Bound between 45th Avenue (45th Cutting) and Essex Terrace Interchange (Westwood Mall) closed from 6pm Saturday to 4am Monday.

The demolition forms part of Sanral’s major infrastructure upgrade to improve traffic flow and safety in one of the busiest transport corridors in Durban.

“The demolition of the remaining old King Cetshwayo Bridge near Westwood Mall is a crucial step in enabling the addition of extra lanes on the M13 as well as the N2 below,” Lowe added. “Once its demolition is completed, traffic will be accommodated on the recently completed new M13 eastbound bridge.”

Motorists are urged to use alternative routes and plan their journeys in advance to avoid delays. Sanral apologised for the inconvenience and appreciates the public’s patience as critical infrastructure upgrades are carried out.
