Councilor, residents tackle drainage issues in Olievenhoutbosch – SABC News

Ward 77 councilor Kenneth Masha and community members of Olievenhoutbosch Extension 37 have joined forces to work towards creating a conducive environment for residents.

Sewer leakage and stormwater blockages have been a common problem in the area for a long time and this led to the blockage of the drainage system, which gradually lead to erosion of underlying soil, drainage issues and damage to road infrastructure.

Residents, with the help of the councilor Masha, took it up on themselves to fix the recurring problem.

One of the residents, Thabo Mabaso says damaged road infrastructure, the safety of their children was the main factor to wake up and do it for themselves.

“We just decided to wake up, go and clean because the drainage system was covered by soil and grass. Instead of going down the drain, the water would be stuck in the middle of the road and cause massive damage to the road as well. This is very dangerous to the kids as well, because the area is situated next to two schools, a primary and high school. We would like the government to at least do site visits every now and then and provide cleaning material for us to clean properly whenever issues like this arise.”

Masha extended his thanks to Extension 37 residents for taking charge ensuring safety to locals at large.

“Thank you very much bahlali [community] for coming in numbers in ensuring that our community is clean and safe for both our children, motorists and the community at large. Let’s continue to live and take care of our community.”
