DA councillor defends himself against threats of misconduct

A Belhar ward councillor has kicked back at the National Coloured Congress’s (NCC) call for him to be removed and investigated, alleging that he threatened a resident who was evicted from a premises at the Pentec Housing Project.

Instead, councillor Willie Jaftha said the calls to have him removed and investigated was a political attack from politicians who did not do their homework.

“I need to speak with the DA and the City on the way forward and respond to them,” Jaftha said.

“She needs to apologise, I never spoke with her.

“I did go to the workplace to find out who she is.

“I went to her workplace because she was defaming me claiming I spoke with her.

“They were in that house illegally, there were no subsidies for them, it was not their homes.

“The City took them to court and there was a process.

“I am not happy that she said I sold her a house on a station and gave the keys to a woman and that the woman moved into the house, that never happened.”

In a statement by Dean Goliath, NCC PR councillor, they claim that Jaftha threatened a resident who was one of 13 families who were evicted by the City in April.

“The NCC notes with deep concern the alleged threatening behaviour of DA councillor Willie Jafta towards a resident of Belhar.

“The resident in question is among the 13 families who were evicted in April 2025 from the Pentec Housing Project in Belhar, accused of occupying the houses ‘illegally’.

According to the affected resident, councillor Jafta approached her at her place of work and allegedly issued threats related to the ongoing matter. The NCC has been closely monitoring this case and is in possession of case details, including reference numbers shared by the victim.

“The NCC demands: an immediate and independent investigation into the conduct of councillor Jafta, for the City of Cape Town and the DA to take disciplinary steps against him, that, if found guilty, councillor Jafta be removed from public office without delay.

The people of Belhar and greater Cape Town deserve leaders who act with integrity and compassion not intimidation and self-interest. The NCC will continue to advocate for the rights and safety of our communities and will not be silent when the vulnerable are threatened.”

Jaftha said in his response to the demand for him to be removed: “He must do his homework first and check the background on this matter.”
