Ramaphosa calls for peace as US strikes Iran’s nuclear sites – SABC News
The South African government says it has noted with a great deal of anxiety the entry by the United States into the Israel-Iran war.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on all involved in the conflict to pursue efforts at dialogue to end the war.
This follows Trump’s statement that the US has completed a successful attack on three nuclear sites in Iran yesterday morning.
Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya says Pretoria will support peace talks initiatives.
“It was South Africa’s sincerest hope that President Donald Trump would use his influence and that of the US government to prevail on the parties to pursue a dialogue path in resolving their issues of dispute. South Africa calls on the United States, Israel, and Iran to give the United Nations the opportunity and space to lead on the peaceful resolution of the matters of dispute, including the inspection and verification of Iran’s status of uranium enrichment, as well as its broader nuclear capacity.”

Meanwhile, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema says his party firmly supports Iran, who he says has the right to defend itself against what he says was “Western imperialism”.
Speaking at the funeral of 10 EFF members from Vryheid who died in a bus crash last week, Malema reaffirms his support for Palestine. He says that the struggle of South African youth is part of a global fight, and that the suffering of children in South Africa is deeply connected to the pain of children in Palestine, where bombs fall on homes and schools.
“We stand in full solidarity with Iran, a country under siege from Western Imperialism for choosing independence. We reject the bullying of this nation by the United States, Israel, and its allies; we stand by their right to defend themselves by any means necessary, let Israel finally have. Let Israel finally have a taste of the devastation and violence it has perpetrated in Gaza,” Malema says.
