Khayelitsha community in mourning after ANC leader Myolisi Magibisela's tragic murder

Police have launched a murder investigation following the killing of a local African National Congress (ANC) leader in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.

Ward 96 ANC convenor and South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) zonal chairperson, Myolisi Magibisela, was gunned down at his home in Hlanga Street, Makhaza, on Monday morning.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the incident and said Makhaza police had registered a murder docket.

“The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Monday, at about 10.50am, at a premises at Hlanga Street, Makhaza, where a 48-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded, are under investigation,” said Van Wyk.

“According to reports, gunshots were heard, and when community members looked out, they saw a white VW Jetta speeding off and found the deceased shot several times. They immediately informed the police, who attended the crime scene.”

Myolisi Magibisela died on the scene after he was shot at his home on Monday.

Medical personnel declared Magibisela dead at the scene. No arrests have been made, and the motive for the shooting remains unclear.

The ANC in the Dullah Omar Region expressed shock at the killing.

Chairperson Ndithini Thyido said Magibisela was a dedicated activist and community organiser.

“We are also outraged by the senseless killing of its Ward 96 convenor Myolisi Magibisela, who was gunned down at his home in Hlanga Crescent in Makhaza on Monday,” said Thyido.

“Comrade Magibisela is the type of all-round community activist that the ANC so desperately needs to drive its renewal programme. The ANC urges all its members and supporters in the ward, in Khayelitsha, and the region to remain calm and allow the SAPS to leave no stone unturned until the perpetrators of this heinous crime are brought to book.”

Long-time colleague and fellow activist Bulelani Qolani said he was devastated by the news and described Magibisela as someone who had dedicated his life to serving others.

“I am deeply hurt and shocked about this murder. I still cannot believe this has happened. I worked closely with him,” said Qolani.

“Magibisela was an activist who loved serving his community. He was a soldier who died in the war. Those are the consequences of being an activist, of a man who refused to sit back and watch his community fall apart.

“He fought for people’s basic human rights. I knew him as a passionate, approachable, family man. He was married with children. He was with us when we moved to the eThembeni informal settlements.

“I have faith in our station commander, who promised to work on this case. We look forward to hearing what the motive for this murder was.”
