Woman trapped for 3 days in an active volcano dies despite rescue efforts
A Brazilian tourist has died after a desperate four-day rescue operation failed to save her from the slopes of an active volcano in Indonesia.
The death of Juliana Marins, a 26‑year‑old publicist, fell nearly 150 metres down a cliff on Mount Rinjani in Indonesia while hiking with friends, has left her family and rescuers heartbroken.
The accident occurred early on Saturday morning when Marins slipped from a ledge and fell down the sheer rockface of the popular tourist site.
According to authorities, she came to rest approximately 150 metres from the top and was initially heard calling for help. Drone footage confirmed she was still alive after the fall, prompting rescue teams to launch a series of recovery attempts.
However, worsening weather and thick fog made access to the site virtually impossible. The unstable terrain added to the challenge, with the young woman wedged in soft sand that hampered efforts to pull her to safety.
According to the head of the local rescue team, Muhammad Hariyadi, every attempt was hampered by visibility and terrain conditions.
After four days of tireless efforts, Indonesia’s Search and Rescue Agency announced that Marins had been found deceased.
According to a release from park officials, the search and rescue team reported the hiker was spotted “using a drone, in a position stuck on a rock cliff at a depth of 500 metres and visually motionless.”
It remains unclear precisely when she died or whether her body has yet been recovered.
Her family, devastated by the news, issued a statement thanking the rescue crews and all those who offered support throughout the ordeal.
“Today the rescue team checked the location where Juliana Marins was,” the statement read. “With much sadness we have to report that she did not survive. We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of love and support we have received.”
