Zohran Mamdani poised to become New York City’s first Muslim mayor – SABC News
A 33-year-old Ugandan born self-described democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani is poised to win the Democratic Primary for Mayor in New York City.
This is a shock upset to former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo who had been leading in the polls.
Mamdani who entered the race as a virtual unknown eight months ago, could become the city’s first Muslim mayor.
While the final results will not be immediately known given the ranked-choice voting system in the city, Mamdani declared a stunning victory overnight with the frontrunner and democratic party stalwart Andrew Cuomo conceding the race.
Mamdani ran a progressive, energized campaign, tapping into social media while promising to make city buses free, stabilizing rent and expanding housing by raising taxes on the city’s wealthiest, an agenda that seemed to resonate.
Seeing a surge in young voters and likely helped by the endorsements of social democrats Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Curtis Silwa won the Republican primary while the corruption plagued incumbent Mayor Eric, a former democrat is likely to stand as an Independent in that race.
