Eastern Cape on alert for severe cold and damaging winds, residents urged to stay indoors

The Eastern Cape Provincial Government has urged residents to prepare for extremely cold and windy conditions as a powerful cold front is expected to sweep across the province from Thursday, June 26, through Friday, June 27, 2025.

This comes after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a yellow level 2 warning for damaging winds that could lead to localised damage to informal settlements, as well as possible disruptions to power and communication lines in parts of the province’s interior.

According to SAWS, the cold front will first make landfall in the Western Cape and Northern Cape on Wednesday before moving towards the Eastern Cape by Thursday.

The province can expect strong winds and plummeting temperatures, making travel and outdoor activity hazardous.

The provincial government urged residents to take precautionary measures.

“Residents are advised to stay indoors where possible, keep warm, monitor road conditions carefully, and avoid being on the road unnecessarily or crossing overflowing bridges, streams and rivers, as such may lead to dire consequences for those on board,” said the government spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie.

Subsistence and commercial farmers are also being warned to take action to protect their livestock from the expected cold snap.

“Subsistence and commercial farmers are urged to keep their animals in a safe environment,” the government advised.

Authorities say they are on high alert and are coordinating response efforts to manage any weather-related emergencies.

“Government is working closely with relevant authorities to respond to weather-related incidents that may occur during this period. We urge communities to remain vigilant and prioritise their safety and those around them.”

The public is encouraged to stay informed by regularly checking updates from the South African Weather Service.
