Police in the Eastern Cape are searching for the mother of a baby that was found dumped on Saturday.
Police officers attached to the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offenses (FCS) Unit have appealed for public assistance.
The provincial police spokesperson, Captain Namhla Mdleleni, said police were called to a scene on Saturday, June 28.
βIt is alleged that on Saturday, police were summoned to a scene and on arrival, they found +- four-week-old baby boy dumped and still alive. The baby was taken to the hospital for medical examination, and a case of child neglect was opened,β Mdleleni said.
The police appeal to anyone who can assist with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspect to contact Detective Warrant Officer Sogiba at 0713524551 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111. Alternatively, send a tip-off on the MySAPS App.
Last week, the Gauteng Department of Health confirmed the recovery of two babies abducted babies from its public health facilities during separate incidents.
The first abduction took place on May 12, at the Alexandra Community Health Centre when a one-month-old baby went missing from the Paediatric Outpatient Department (POD) after the mother briefly stepped away and left the baby in the care of a stranger.
The second incident took place on June 23, at the Winnie Mandela Clinic in Kaalfontein. A mother had brought in her three-day-old baby for a postnatal checkup.
The Department said the recovery was as a result of its maximum security, CCTV surveillance, and the collaboration between officials from the Gauteng Department of Health and law enforcement officials.
