One arrested in Gugulethu mass shooting, police hunt second suspect

Police in the Western Cape have apprehended one suspect alleged to be involved in the Gugulethu mass shooting, which took place over the weekend.

Seven men were gunned down while socialising in a kitchen in the Kanana informal settlement on Saturday, June 28.

Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Andrè Traut, said members attached to the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit worked tirelessly to uncover the circumstances of the mass murder.

Traut confirmed a 35-year-old man was arrested on Monday, June 30.

While the investigation continues and the search for an additional suspect is underway, the arrested individual is currently being processed for his imminent court appearance in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court, following formal charges,” Traut said.

He said police are still appealing for assistance tracing Loyisa Matinisi, who is sought in connection with the case.

“The SAPS remains steadfast in its commitment to confronting violent crime with the full might of the law. Those who choose to disregard the rule of law can expect to face its full consequences,” Traut said.

Three other men who were asleep elsewhere in the house at the time of the attack escaped unharmed.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Sergeant Sithembele Sambunjelwa of the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit at 073 416 5224.

All information will be treated in the strictest confidence.
