Rainy day fun: 5 things to do these school holidays (even when it’s pouring!)
You’ve waited all term for the school holidays — but just when you’re ready for beach days and park adventures, the clouds roll in and the rain starts falling. Don’t worry! Rainy days don’t have to be boring. There’s a whole world of fun waiting inside if you get creative. Here are five awesome things you can do when it’s wet outside:
1. Craft Like a Pro: Rainy days, are perfect for unleashing your inner artist. Grab some paper, paint, old magazines, scissors, glue, and get stuck into a craft project. Here are some ideas:
Make a dreamcatcher using string, beads and feathers.
Design your own comic book starring you as the superhero.
Create a collage from cut-outs in old magazines or newspapers.
Decorate a cardboard box and turn it into a spaceship, castle or pet hotel.
You don’t need fancy supplies — just your imagination and a few things from around the house.
2. Movie Marathon Madness: Turn your lounge into a cinema for the day. Close the curtains, make some popcorn (ask an adult to help), and pick your favourite movies. You could:
Watch a trilogy like How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, or Harry Potter.
Have a themed day — superheroes, magical animals, or animated classics.
Let each family member pick one movie to keep it fair and fun!
Don’t forget to make movie tickets and posters for your home theatre!
3. Bake Up a Storm: The kitchen is the best place to warm up when it’s cold and rainy. Baking can be loads of fun, and you get something tasty at the end! Try: Chocolate chip cookies, Rainbow cupcakes, mini pizzas with your own toppings, No-bake marshmallow treats.
You’ll also learn measuring, mixing, and teamwork. Don’t forget to help clean up afterwards.
4. Games, Puzzles and LEGO Challenges: board games, card games, and puzzles are perfect for rainy days. Whether it’s a game of Uno, Scrabble, Monopoly, or snakes and ladders — it’s a great way to get the whole family involved.
Feeling creative? Try a LEGO challenge: build the tallest tower that can stand on its own, create a LEGO version of your house or school or design a new animal or vehicle.
You could also invent your own board game using cardboard, dice and drawing skills!
5. Build a reading fort and get lost in a book: one of the coziest ways to spend a rainy day is inside your very own reading fort. Build it with blankets, cushions, and chairs. Add fairy lights or a torch, and you’ve got the perfect hideaway.
Choose a fun book — adventure, mystery, or fantasy — and dive into another world. Ask a grown-up to read with you, or start your own holiday reading challenge.
