Search underway for missing fisherman swept off rocks near Gordons Bay
A search is underway for a 43-year-old fisherman from Blue Downs who is believed to have fallen off the rocks while fishing near the Gordons Bay Battery, between Gordons Bay and the Steenbras River Mouth.
According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) the man was reported missing around 10:29 am on Saturday, July 5, leading to a rapid response from multiple emergency services.
“On Saturday, 5 July, at 10h29, NSRI Gordons Bay duty crew and the CoCT (City of Cape Town) water rescue network were activated following reports of an angler, a 43-year-old male, from Blue Downs, Cape Town, swept off rocks by waves while fishing,” NSRI said.
The NSRI, added that their Gordons Bay Station 9 crew launched the rescue craft Spirit of Surfski, while the EMS/AMS Skymed helicopter was also deployed to aid the search from the air.
“NSRI Gordons Bay duty crew responded to the NSRI Gordons Bay station 9 rescue base, where the NSRI rescue craft Spirit of Surfski was launched.
“An NSRI rescue vehicle, NSRI rescue swimmers, the SA Police Services, WC Government Health EMS and an EMS rescue squad, ER24 ambulance services and Cape Town Traffic Services responded”.
However, despite an extensive air, sea, and shoreline search in rough sea conditions, no sign of the missing fisherman has yet been found.
“An extensive air, sea and shoreline search, in rough sea conditions, has revealed no signs of the missing man.
Police Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS), supported by the NSRI Gordons Bay team, remain on scene, continuing the search.
“Police have opened an investigation. Thoughts, care and compassion are with the family and friends of the missing man in this difficult time”.
