Swati national arrested for 2024 Umlazi mass shooting
A 28-year-old foreign national has been arrested for the murders of six people who were shot dead in Umlazi, in August last year.
Melusi Dlamini, a Swati national, was arrested in Krugersdorp in Gauteng last week, and faces six counts of murder. He has since appeared in the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court and abandoned his bail application.
Police spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said on August 17, six men were drinking at an informal settlement at V/6 Section in Umlazi.
“Three women were with them. The group was approached by two men who asked to buy cigarettes. The group told the men that no one was selling cigarettes, and the two men left,” Netshiunda said.
Police said the pair came back a few minutes later and ordered the three women to lie down while they shot the six men. The six were declared dead at the scene. The women were unharmed.
“Investigations uncovered that the killings were revenge-motivated. It is reported that the deceased victims, who were both Xhosa-speaking, had allegedly fought with Swati nationals who resided in the same area,” Netshiunda said.
Police said Dlamini also faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
The case was remanded to August 14.
