Breakthrough in Dr Sibanyoni case: Suspect arrested eight months after Nelspruit murder

The Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit in Mpumalanga has made significant strides in the relentless fight against gender-based violence and femicide, following the arrest of a 39-year-old male suspect in Nelspruit.

This pivotal development comes nearly eight months after the tragic murder of Dr Nondumiso Sibanyoni, a 34-year-old physician, who was gunned down outside a gym in Nelspruit on the early morning of November 20, 2024.

Dr Sibanyoni, renowned for her work at a local public hospital, was discovered outside her vehicle, a victim of what has been deemed a senseless act of violence.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene but tragically confirmed her death, leaving the community and her colleagues in mourning.

As the investigation unfolds, the motive behind Dr Sibanyoni’s brutal killing remains unconfirmed, sparking concern among residents who are seeking answers.

The local police, alongside paramedics, have engaged in a thorough investigation aimed at tracking down those responsible.

Authorities have expressed that they are keeping the door open for further arrests as they continue to pursue leads related to this heinous crime.

Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, has lauded the commendable efforts of the investigative team.

“This again shows our determination to combat GBVF. At the time of the incident, we promised that the investigation team would leave no stone unturned to bring those responsible to justice, and we have delivered,” stated Mkhwanazi.

He added, “However, we are still in pursuit of others that were involved in this senseless murder.”

The suspect is set to face charges of murder at the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on July 10.

As this situation continues to develop, the community holds its breath in hopes for justice in a case that has rocked the very foundation of their safety and solidarity.
