Arrests made in Chatsworth murder of armed response officer
Two suspects are facing a string of charges, including the murder of an armed response officer, following a business robbery in Chatsworth over the weekend.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said police in Bayview arrested two suspects for murder, business robbery, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and malicious damage to property.
It is alleged that two men shot and killed a man during a business robbery on Lenny Naidu Drive on Sunday.
Netshiunda said the suspects will appear in court soon.
ALS Paramedics Medical Services spokesperson Garrith Jamieson stated that the service, along with Amawele Emergency Services, responded to a shooting incident in Chatsworth on Sunday morning.
Jamieson said paramedics arrived on the scene to find that there had been an alleged robbery at a store, and a security officer is believed to have tried to stop the suspects when he was shot.
“The man, believed to be in his forties, had sustained a gunshot wound to his chest. Unfortunately, there was nothing paramedics could do for him, and he was declared dead at the scene,” Jamieson said.
Amawele Emergency Services spokesperson Claude Subramodey said two elderly people were also treated and stabilised on the scene before being transported to a private hospital after their vehicle was shot during the crossfire.
Subramodey said two suspects were arrested while fleeing.
KZN VIP Protection Services spokesperson Gareth Naidoo expressed condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues at One Stop Group following armed response officer (ARO) Maniram’s death.
“His bravery and dedication to protecting others will never be forgotten. Vikesh was not only a valued security officer but a cherished individual who served with honour, pride, and unwavering commitment,” Naidoo said.
“The entire KZNVIP team stands in solidarity with One Stop Group during this incredibly difficult time. We mourn alongside them as we honour the memory of a fallen hero.
“May ARO Vikesh Maniram rest in eternal peace. His sacrifice will not be forgotten.”
