Hosted by the Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Department, the meeting aims to facilitate high-level discussions between G20 member states and other invited countries on environmental and nature conservation issues.
The goal is to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Deputy Minister of the department, Narend Singh states they have expanded from five topics discussed in the March virtual meeting to six.
“From five topics, we moved to six because we felt there were issues like climate change, pollution and waste management that needed to be included as separate topics and there will be in-depth discussions. South Africa has prepared technical papers, draft papers on all of them. We’ve been working very hard over the last few months preparing these papers so that they can be put to the countries that are here, today,” the Deputy Minister says.
Singh says 19 of the 20 G20 countries are represented and nine other countries have been invited, seven of which have sent delegates, today.
