Community mourns the loss of armed response officer, a hero in the line of duty

One Stop Group has described its fallen hero, Vikesh Maniram, as a determined individual who carried out every task with pride and dedication.

Maniram, 39, was shot and killed during a business robbery in Bayview, Chatsworth, on Sunday.

One Stop Security manager and community leader Racheal Pillay said it is with a heavy heart that One Stop shares their great loss of a “wonderful and most hardworking” colleague.

Pillay said the community was also shocked and saddened because Maniram helped combat crime in and around Newlands.

“He wore his uniform with pride and served his community to the best of his ability,” Pillay said.

She said Maniram had a good relationship with everyone he worked with. At every site he worked at, they spoke highly of him and how he took his job seriously.

“The sorrow in their prayers and thoughts of our young colleague shows how much he was loved by all,” Pillay said.

She said Maniram had respect for all he worked for. The schools where he worked expressed that they would miss his friendliness among pupils and teachers. He was described as a person who took the time to greet everyone and would lend a hand and assist in any way he could.

Pillay said Maniram carried himself with great dignity and pride.

“In the line of duty, he died as a hero, not just sacrificing his life, but he showed us how seriously he took his job,” Pillay said.

“He has left an incredible impact on the community. He has left a mark that will always be remembered for his great service to the people he served.”

Vikesh Maniram, a dedicated security guard and community hero, was tragically killed during a robbery. His death leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of those he diligently served.

Pillay said Maniram will always be remembered and sadly missed by all.

Police in Bayview arrested two suspects for murder, business robbery, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and malicious damage to property.

According to an incident report, two armed suspects robbed a tote for an undisclosed amount of cash. They tried escaping in a public taxi when the guard stopped the taxi. The suspects then shot the guard before fleeing on foot toward Colorado Circle.

Pro Secure armed response gave chase, and the first suspect was caught on the Colorado Circle pathway. He was cuffed and handed over to an off-duty Bayview detective.

The second suspect was apprehended from a residential property on Colorado Circle, with other responding service providers. The suspect was hiding behind the homeowner’s temple area.

ALS Paramedics Medical Services spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said Maniram sustained a gunshot wound to his chest. There was nothing paramedics could do for him, and he was declared dead at the scene.

Amawele Emergency Services spokesperson Claude Subramodey said two elderly people were also treated and stabilised at the scene before being transported to a private hospital after their vehicle was shot during the crossfire.
