The Springboks have pounced first – and Scotland coach Gregor Townsend says he can’t argue, hailing Boan Venter’s rise to Test level.

Venter, who joined Edinburgh from the Cheetahs in 2021, had been eligible to qualify for Scotland via residency ahead of the 2026 Six Nations. However, his inclusion in the Bok starting lineup to face Georgia at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, ends any speculation about where his allegiance lies.

The 28-year-old loosehead had earned his place in Rassie Erasmus’ Bok squad after a string of standout performances in the Vodacom URC.

Speaking to Scotland Rugby News, Townsend was full of praise for Venter, who has been one of the few consistent performers in an Edinburgh side that has struggled for form.

“I think he’s been one of the best players in the URC the last two or three years,” said Townsend.

“This year was probably his best season – whether it’s the set-piece or his ball-carrying, he’s really impressed. We wish him all the best. He’s now embarking on an international career and it shows the quality of the player he is.”

Asked whether there was any disappointment about losing a potential asset, Townsend was pragmatic.

“It’s really hypothetical,” he said.

“He wasn’t going to be available for a few months … and it’s hypothetical until it happens — and it’s not going to happen now.”
