Paternal family of Jayden-Lee Meek urges respect for mourning Dunn family

As the bail application for Tiffany Meek began in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court for the murder of her son, 11-year-old Jayden-Lee Meek, her in-laws have asked the public to respect and give space to both families.

The paternal family of slain Jayden-Lee Meek spoke to the media outside the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court, stating they have placed their full trust in the judiciary for justice to prevail.

Owen Meek, cousin to Jayden-Lee’s father, said they are standing firm and will see this through.

He also clarified that Tiffany Meek married into their family and that Jayden’s father was not in a good space.

“He is not taking it well,” he said.

Tiffany Meek was in tears in the dock on Friday.

“We are happy with the outcome for today. It is a very small win for us, currently keeping Tiffany behind bars. During this time, we ask for a little respect for the families. A lot of social media is going on. A lot of what was stated in the bail application we do not agree with,” he said.

Owen said the family stands firm in their beliefs and thanked the public for the outpouring of love and continuous support.

“We stand firm on what our beliefs are. I would like to ask everybody for the continuous support we have been getting. We are very humbled and very blessed. We just ask: let the law take its course. Let us not go on what we assume and what we feel. Everything is now in the hands of the law.  We, as the Meek family, are backing the law. We’re putting our confidence in it that justice will be served for Jayden,” he said.

Owen reiterated that healing after Jayden’s gruesome murder is needed.

“In order for us to get through this, move forward, and heal, we ask the community to be a part of that healing as well. There is a lot of chanting, noise, swearing; we respect that. We respect each and every one for voicing but the main thing is we need to heal. If we don’t heal, we will not move forward from this. Jayden will forever be part of our lives and whatever we do and wherever we go,” he said.

Owen also stated he knew he would receive much flak for the next request he was about to make.

“Let’s not attack the Dunn family. We do know more arrests will have to be made. It has to be made. So we’re asking everyone to give the Dunn family their time to mourn. Remember, Jayden was a part of two families. Both sides are mourning, irrespective of who did it or why they did it. We do know his mum did love him. We want to know why she did it. Who she did it with or, whatever the story was,” he said.

Jayden-Lee Meek was murdered after failing to come home on May 12, 2025.

We want justice, but in the same breath, give the Dunn family some space to recoup. With the community and media all hammering them, they do not have time to process everything. We have to be fair with everything,” Owen added.

Tiffany faces charges of murder, crimen injuria, attempting to defeat or obstruct the course of justice, and defeating or obstructing the administration of justice.

She is expected back in court on Monday, July 21, for the continuation of her bail application.
