Benetton gets Aussie boost?
Wallabies great Michael Lynagh has helped broker a cross-hemisphere deal between his former clubs, sending four Reds players to Benetton on short-term stints.
Centre Josh Flook, loose forward John Bryant, hooker Richie Asiata and scrumhalf Louis Werchon will head to Treviso from July to October, where they’ll bolster Benetton’s depth during the early stages of the new Vodacom URC season.

The deal is part of a growing alliance between the two clubs, with the Reds also set to play Benetton in Treviso in 2026 – their first fixture on Italian soil since 1980.
Lynagh, who won championships with both the Reds (1994) and Benetton (1991–92), helped initiate the relationship earlier this year. His legacy carries extra weight: his son Tom plays for the Reds, while his other son Louis is on the books at Benetton.
“The connection was made through Michael Lynagh,” said Reds general manager Sam Cordingley.
“From the start, we’ve felt a genuine will to create opportunities that can benefit two proud clubs and two strong brands. Michael’s history with both teams, and the fact that his sons are now part of them, makes this something really unique.”
Cordingley added that the secondments offer valuable exposure to international styles of rugby while also strengthening Benetton during the Test window.

Benetton GM Antonio Pavanello said the partnership represents more than just player movement.
“We want to create something lasting. This is a shared vision to build an international rugby ecosystem that generates value and opportunity for both clubs,” said Pavanello.
For 22-year-old Bryant, the move is a big opportunity.
“It’s awesome what the Reds are doing with international chances like this. I’m glad to be part of it.”
All four players will remain eligible for national selection during their European stint.
